Scheherazade New Font Download (TTF)

Scheherazade New is SIL's extended Naskh for vocalized text and Arabic-script languages beyond everyday Arabic. Download the free TTF from SIL's own download page. That package is the upstream source; Google Fonts redistributes the same OFL family.

SIL's current package includes ScheherazadeNew-Regular.ttf, ScheherazadeNew-Medium.ttf, ScheherazadeNew-SemiBold.ttf, and ScheherazadeNew-Bold.ttf, for desktop and web. Install the desktop TTF. Do not install an older family that is named Scheherazade without New if both are on the machine.

Scheherazade New is published by SIL Global under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The license reserves the names Scheherazade and SIL. You can use the font in commercial and scholarly work. If you redistribute the files, keep the license with them and do not use the reserved names for a modified version.

Install the TTF on Windows

1. Unzip the official package and pick the .ttf file you need. Install the font file, not the .zip.
2. Right-click that .ttf and choose Install. Choose Install for all users when everyone on the PC should see it.
3. Quit and reopen Word, or any other app that was already open, so the new family loads.

Install the TTF on macOS

1. Unzip the official package and double-click the .ttf file. Font Book opens.
2. Click Install, then confirm the family appears in Font Book.
3. Reopen the app where you want to use the font.

On Linux, copy the same .ttf files into ~/.fonts/ or ~/.local/share/fonts/ and refresh the font cache.

How to Use Scheherazade New in Word and Canva

Microsoft Word

Select Scheherazade New, not an older Scheherazade install. Vocalized text needs the complex-script font set to Scheherazade New and the paragraph set to right-to-left. SIL notes that some mark and lam-alef behavior in publishing apps depends on ligatures staying on.

1. Enable Arabic as an Office authoring language if you do not see a Right-to-left paragraph button. Microsoft shows that button in the Paragraph group on the Home tab only after a right-to-left language is enabled.
2. Select the Arabic text and choose Scheherazade New on the Home tab. Open the Font dialog with Ctrl+D and set the complex-script font to Scheherazade New as well, so Arabic does not stay on a fallback while Latin text uses another face.
3. In the Paragraph group, click Right-to-left. Arabic letters join when the paragraph direction is right-to-left and the complex-script font is the family you installed.
4. If Scheherazade New is missing from the font menu, close Word, confirm the TTF installed, and open the document again.

Google Docs

Search More fonts for Scheherazade New. The older Scheherazade name is a different release. If Docs does not list the New family, use the SIL TTF in Word.

1. On the Google Docs home screen, open the menu, choose Settings, and turn on Always show right-to-left controls.
2. In the document, select the text, open the font menu, choose More fonts, and search for Scheherazade New.
3. If the family is not listed, Docs cannot use a TTF from your computer. Use Word with the installed font, or upload the TTF where the tool accepts custom fonts.
4. Select the Arabic paragraph and click Paragraph direction on the toolbar so the paragraph runs right-to-left.

Canva

No Canva help or newsroom page confirms that Scheherazade New is in the built-in font menu. Upload a static TTF such as ScheherazadeNew-Regular.ttf. SIL's package also contains WOFF2 web fonts; Canva accepts TTF, OTF, and WOFF, not WOFF2.

1. Font upload is available on Canva Pro, Canva Teams, Canva Business, Canva Education, and Canva for Nonprofits. A Brand Kit owner or admin has to upload the file.
2. From the homepage, open Brand, then Fonts, then Add to category, then Upload a font. Canva accepts OTF, TTF, and WOFF. It does not accept ZIP or WOFF2.
3. Upload each static style you need. Bold stays unavailable until the bold file is uploaded. Canva does not support variable fonts.
4. In the editor, select the text, choose the uploaded family, and set the paragraph to right-to-left so Arabic joins.

Canva documents the upload path in Upload and use Brand Kit fonts and the accepted formats in file upload requirements. The SIL Open Font License allows embedding in a design. Upload only fonts you are licensed to use.

Scheherazade New vs Noto Naskh Arabic

Scheherazade New is the face for vocalized, multilingual, and scholarly Arabic-script text, with a large Unicode Arabic repertoire and Regular, Medium, SemiBold, and Bold. Noto Naskh Arabic is the quieter screen face for ordinary digital reading. Use Scheherazade New for Qur'an lines, dictionaries, and language documentation. Use Noto Naskh Arabic when the same passage is a website or an app and you want a simpler Naskh.
